Icelandic Sheep

Icelandic’s are a very old breed of sheep relatively new to this county.  They are known to be a hardy, prolific breed which thrives on pasture and hay. They are excellent mothers and triplets are not uncommon.  Icelandic’s are a triple purpose breed used for fiber, meat and milk production.
Icelandic sheep produce a dual coated fleece which may be which may be processed together as one bulky fiber or separated out into what is called the tog and the thel.   The wool is very versatile and comes in many colors.  Icelandic fleece is one of the best for felting.  It is low in lanolin so little weight is lost in washing as compared to other breeds. We shear our sheep in the spring and the fall.

Icelandic sheep are registered through the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation, known as the CLRC.  The Icelandic Sheep Breeders of North America (ISBONA) is a valuable resource and source of information about the breed.
